George Lewis, 89, died Monday (3/23) at the Big Bend Hospice House. A native of Waynesville, North Carolina, he came to Tallahassee in 2002 from San Diego. George had been with NASA for over 30 years and worked with them as an electrician. During his years with NASA he lived in Merritt Island and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island and moved his affiliation to the Thomasville Road Baptist Church when he came to Tallahassee. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the Merchant Marines during that time....

George Lewis, 89, died Monday (3/23) at the Big Bend Hospice House. A native of Waynesville, North Carolina, he came to Tallahassee in 2002 from San Diego. George had been with NASA for over 30 years and worked with them as an electrician. During his years with NASA he lived in Merritt Island and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Merritt Island and moved his affiliation to the Thomasville Road Baptist Church when he came to Tallahassee. He was a veteran of WWII having served in the Merchant Marines during that time. A man who enjoyed working with his hands, he was always tinkering with various things and trying to improve them. He also was fond of working on old automobiles and restoring them.

He is survived by his wife: Hazel; daughter and son-in-law: Abigail and Jimmy Thorn of Tallahassee; brother: Raymond of Clearwater; grandchildren: Stephanie Swayngum, Jordan, Morgan, and Reid Thorn; great-grandchildren: Crystal, Jonathan, Daniel; and eight great-great grandchildren.

Graveside services and interment will be in Rocky Branch Cemetery, Waynesville, NC on Friday, 4/3.
